List Of The Best Cameras For Blogging

What to Look For In A Blogging Camera?

Selecting the perfect blogger camera isn’t just finding a camera with the highest megapixels at the lowest cost, it is much more complicated than that. There are certain features that you must look for and certain features you might want to exclude, especially if you want to save money.

Here are some features of a camera you will want to consider when selecting the best camera for blogging.

1. Megapixels

When I was purchasing my first blog camera, I focused too much on megapixels. After all, the more megapixels the camera has, the better it is going to be right? More can’t hurt, right?

Wrong.

Megapixels simply determine the resolution of your images, and it has little to do with the quality of the photos themselves. Quantity does not equal quality.

For example, one of the most common megapixel sizes for cameras now is 24 megapixels, which translates to 24,000,000 pixels. To put that in simpler terms, a 24-megapixel image is simply 6,000 pixels by 4,000 pixels because 4000 multiplied by 6000 yields 24,000,000.

Just to give you a rough estimate, a 15.6-inch laptop has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. That means that a 15.6-inch laptop cannot fully appreciate the images coming from a 24-megapixel camera. Not only are the megapixels wasted, but they contribute to huge file sizes.

If you are a blogger that focuses on social media and most of your audience sees your images through mobile, you will not have to worry about megapixels.  Unless you intend on making a giant print of your photo or looking at it on your 4K television, a camera with high megapixels is usually overkill.

2. Weight & Size

Heavy Camera for Bloggers

As a travel blogger myself, the weight and size of the camera play a huge part in my decision-making process. You can have the best camera for bloggers in the world but if it weighs like a baby elephant, would you still carry it with you? Of course not… (sorry baby elephants in the world.)

This is especially true for travel bloggers and vloggers, who usually have to carry their cameras in their hands for an extended period of time.

If you aren’t a video blogger or a travel blogger, cameras that are too bulky and heavy play less of an effect on you, but it is something worth considering when getting the ideal camera body.

3. Sensor Size & Sensor Quality

The sensor’s size and quality are arguably the most important parts of the camera. That is because they assist in capturing light to produce the final image and if you have broken a sensor in a camera before, you will know how expensive the repair is.

Full-frame cameras have bigger sensors compared to APS-C or 1″ sensors. Consequently, full-frame cameras are usually bigger and pricey than cameras with cropped sensors (aka anything under the size of a full-frame sensor).

The better the sensor, the more you are able to increase the ISO Range (camera’s sensitivity to light) without affecting the image quality. An excellent sensor is essential for bloggers that might have to shoot in low-light situations, such as food bloggers or lifestyle bloggers.

4. Maximum Burst Rate

Continuous-Burst-Rate-Camera
High maximum burst rate allowed me to capture my friend in motion

Maximum burst rate refers to the number of consecutive shots a camera can take before it needs to buffer. Maximum burst rate isn’t a very important specification for most photographers, but it is essential for bloggers.

Why?

A camera with a high maximum burst rate allows you to take multiple photos of the subject in motion. We all know that the perfect photo needs to look natural, and that is often achieved with movement like a hair flip or just walking back and forth.

With a high maximum burst rate, it makes it easier to capture a dynamic photo for your blog or social media. This is especially important when you have to take photos of yourself with a tripod.

5. Video Capability and Quality

If video and cinematography are a stable part of your blogging arsenal, then choosing a camera with excellent video capability is a must. Does the camera shoot at 4K? At what fps (frames per seconds) does it shoot it at? Does it do timelapse and slow-mo?

Besides the resolution and fps of a camera, what bitrates does it shoot in? Higher bit rates store more information to create better quality videos.  However, they do tend to take up a lot more space.

A camera with good video quality might be something you want to avoid if that isn’t your blogging format. Cameras with excellent video features can be very costly and you don’t want to pay for something you are not going to use.

6. Lens Selection

Lens-Selection-Camera

The lens is probably the most important part of a blogger’s setup. In fact, the lens of a camera is often more expensive (and more important) than the camera itself. The lens of the camera allows the blogger to have more full creative control and create content that fits with their vision.

A blogger’s camera is only as good as the lens it is equipped with.

Unfortunately, not all cameras can use the same lenses. For example, if you have a Canon camera, you cannot use Nikon’s lenses unless you have an adapter. These adapters are also fairly costly and can have detrimental effects on your photos and videos.

Before purchasing the best camera, bloggers should take a look into the available lenses for that specific camera, how much they cost, and the sizes they come in.

7. Fully Articulated / Tilting LCD Screen

If you are a vlogger, then a camera with a fully articulated or tilting LCD screen is imperative to you. A fully articulated is the most desirable feature as it allows you to flip the screen completely 180 degrees so you can see yourself as you record videos or take photos.  Some tilting screens only flip up to 90 degrees and can help you to shoot in tight places and achieve a unique perspective.

You might think a fully articulated LCD screen is a common feature in a thousand-dollar camera, it is not. Though not a rare commodity, it is a feature you must look for specifically when purchasing a blogging camera.

8. Point-And-Shoot vs. Mirrorless vs. DSLR

What cameras do bloggers use? Mirrorless? DSLR? Film?

There have been debates for years about which is the best type of camera to use: point-and-shoot, mirrorless, or DSLR. While there is certainly no “best” type of camera, there are situations where a certain type of camera would excel.

Below we will walk about the different types of cameras and why the best camera for a blogger might not be the same for another blogger.

(We haven’t mentioned any film cameras in our guide because they are very impractical for a blogger.)

Cameras Blogging Comparison

Point-And Shoot

Point-and-shoot cameras are the simplest, most compact and most affordable types of blogging camera you can purchase. However, the major downfall to point-and-shoot cameras is they don’t allow the user to have much creative control. Point-and-shoot camera’s specifications are also quite poor when compared to mirrorless or DSLR, which isn’t very surprising given the low entry prices.

Mirrorless Cameras

As the name suggests, mirrorless cameras are cameras that do not have a reflex mirror to process the image. Instead, the light passing through the lens goes through a digital sensor to produce the image, which then is displayed on the LCD screen or an EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) if your camera has one.

Mirrorless cameras tend to be more portable than traditional DSLR because the bulky mirror is not there. These cameras also have better video quality, as the lack of a mirror allows the camera to use advanced autofocus technology to achieve a seamless video.

Unlike point-and-shoots, mirrorless cameras give users full creative control. They are also built much better and offer better overall performance, but usually at a higher price point.

The only downside is because of how much the camera relies on the electronic mechanisms, the battery life is short. My current Sony mirrorless camera has about 1/3 of the battery life of my old Nikon DSLR.

DSLR Cameras

Traditional DSLR Camera
Traditional DSLR Camera

In the age of mirrorless cameras, DSLRs are becoming rarer. That is because there really isn’t much a DSLR can offer that a mirrorless camera cannot. Oftentimes, a mirrorless even outshines a DSLR (such as in video quality, portability, and beginner-friendliness).

So why get a DSLR?

There are a few reasons you might want to consider a DSLR for a blogger. Do you need long-lasting battery life? Are you a semi-pro in photography and like the feel of an optical viewfinder?

For most bloggers, cameras like DSLRs are just not ideal for our situations. That is why we have only recommended one DSLR in our buying guide.

Experience the ease of blogging with Sony Mirrorless a7C, one of Sony’s newest cameras and the smallest and lightest full frame camera in the world (at the time of writing)! It won the Red Dot Design Award for 2021.

My photography teacher once said the best camera is the one you have on you. At 509 grams or 1.12 pounds, bloggers are definitely more inclined to carry the Sony a7C around and not miss out on any photo-taking opportunities. The Sony a7C’s 740-shot battery will also reduce the need to carry multiple batteries.

For that reason, the Sony a7C is the perfect mirrorless camera for travel bloggers, street photographers, and lifestyle bloggers.

Way pricier than my previous camera but definitely worth the upgrade! Pictures are sharp, camera is lighter and so sleek :”)

– Testimonial from sunflowash

The Sony a7C can shoot oversampled 4K videos at up to 30 fps at 8-bit capture. While an 8-bit capture isn’t ideal for dedicated videographers (like Sam Kolder), it is going to be more than enough for the majority of the bloggers.

Unlike the Sony a7 III, the Sony a7C has a fully articulated LCD Screen. This allows vloggers and bloggers who take selfies to have a much easier time getting the perfect shot or footage. The Fujifilm X-T30 is an APS-C mirrorless camera designed to produce aesthetically pleasing images at ease. First of all, the camera’s lightweight and portability allows bloggers, especially lifestyle bloggers, to carry it everywhere they go and capture their daily life.

However, what makes the Fujifilm X-T30 stand out amongst the other excellent blogger cameras is its superb OOC (out of camera) JPEGS. Fujifilm’s color is among the best out of all the different camera brands, and its Film Simulation mode offers bloggers a creative edge.

– ArturoN

However, the lack of a built-in ND filter limits creative control when creating videos, especially when you have a built-in lens that cannot be changed. But what we need to remember is that the Sony CyberShot RX100 VII is a point-and-shoot camera aimed at beginners. The fact that it has such an amazing autofocus system, 4K video capability, image stabilization, and a superb lens makes it an absolute powerhouse.

It is a worthy consideration for bloggers looking for a portable and compact camera and don’t want to lose sleep over what lens to pick for their camera.

The Panasonic Lumix GH5 is a micro four-thirds camera coming from a generation of cameras known for their superb video specifications. The GH5 is no exception.

For starters, the Panasonic Lumix GH5 can shoot 4K at 60 FPS, a feature only top-end cameras can do. The GH5 is able to use the full with of its sensor to capture video, meaning that your 4K footage is sharp and detailed because it is oversampled from 5.1K. It also shoots 10-bit footage meaning that color grading will be much easier.

Its video features are simply astounding, but how do the still images stack up? Pretty well.

This Panasonic micro four-thirds camera is capable of continuous shooting at 9 fps. Combined with its marvelous image stabilization and image processor, achieving the perfect photo is no difficult task. The GH5’s high processing power results in accurate colors and sharp images.

Overall the Panasonic GH5 is an excellent hybrid camera for bloggers, especially one with a video focus. However, if your focus is only on still images, then the impressive video features of this blogger camera would go to waste and we would not recommend you to get the Panasonic Lumix GH5.

The Panasonic Lumix GH5 is one of the company’s best hybrid cameras for still images and video. Bloggers who specialize in cinematic footage and beautiful video would love its extensive video features, and that alone is worth the purchase. However, if your blog is mostly images, you might want to consider a different camera.

How To Use A Blogging Camera?

Believe it or not, getting the perfect camera is only half the battle for a blogger. Just because you have a nice camera and a nice lens doesn’t mean you will be able to produce stunning work.

As a photographer for more than 7 years, I am here to tell you that skills outweigh camera.

A budget camera can still produce extraordinary images in the hands of a good photographer.

That is why we want to emphasize the need to learn about photography itself. Having a good camera is nice, but what is nicer is having the skills to complement it.

That is why we want to dedicate this section to make sure you know where you can get some photography courses. If you cannot get in-person classes, we recommend sites like Skillshare or Masterclass. This series from Skillshare is perfect for beginners!

Best Camera Accessories For Bloggers

Besides skills and a good camera, there are some camera accessories for bloggers that will take you to the next level and prepare you for all circumstances

  • San Disk 128 Extreme Pro SD Card – Cameras don’t usually come with a complimentary SD card, so you have no way to save the images and videos you capture. That is why we recommend the 128 GB San Disk SD Card for its reliability (you don’t want to losoe your work) and high storage!
  • External Hard Drive – What happens when your SD card is full, do you get another one? No! You transfer all your content onto an external hard drive and reuse that SD card. External hard drive is like your bank account, but for photos and videos, so make sure you pick a reliable one like the one we recommended!
  • Manfrotto Traveler Tripod – If you are a frequent solo traveler or if your travel companion isn’t a good photographer, then replace them with the Manfrotto Traveler Tripod (JK). This tripod is lightweight and folds up compactly, perfect for travel bloggers or anyone that needs to be constantly on the move!
  • Lens Cleansing Kit – As a blogger, we are constantly bringing our cameras for blogging to places where it could get dirty and dust could get inside our lens and camera. That is why every photographer and blogger should have a lens cleansing kit within close reach. It will clean your lens, get rid of the pesky dust that could fall on your sensor, and make sure your images are crisp and sharp.
  • Camera Backpack – A professionally designed camera backpack will ensure that all your equipment stays safe and protected when you are out and about. It will offer slots for lens, cameras, and laptops and make sure they stay dry with its waterproofing design. It is an invaluable camera accessory for bloggers.
  • DJI RSC 2 Camera Stabilizer / Gimbal – If you are a blogger that does a lot of videos and cinematic footage, then a 3-axis stabilization gimbal is a must. One of the best gimbals out there that offers superb portability and value is the DJI RSC 2!
