17 Best Cenotes In Tulum You Cannot Miss!

17 Best Cenotes In Tulum You Cannot Miss!

Looking for the best cenotes in Tulum? Worry not.

Dotted in between the pristine beaches, mystical jungles, and ancient archaeological ruins of Mexico are over 6000 cenotes, so choosing the perfect Tulum cenote isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

That is why we have written this guide on the 17 top Tulum cenotes, so you can have a rough idea of what to expect and which ones are worth visiting.

So when you are done eating those delicious street tacos, sipping on tequila (yes, you are supposed to sip), and sun tanning on the beach, let’s go check out some cenotes!

What is a Cenote? How Many Types Are There?

We all know that cenotes are some of the most magical places to visit in Mexico. However, what exactly is a cenote?

By definition, a cenote is a natural sinkhole created by the collapse of the weak bedrock. In the case of the Yucatan Peninsula, the cenote is created by the collapse of limestone, a very porous and weak rock that is abundant in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Ancient Mayans used these cenotes as freshwater supply sources, and occasionally as sacrificial offerings because they believe that cenotes are connected to the underworld where demons and devils live.

Because of this, when we visited Tulum, a local told us to never visit a cenote after sunset. That is because the demons in the water will drag you deep into the cenote. Though it might just be superstitions, no cenote is open after sunset.

Depending on the way the limestone has collapsed, different types of cenotes are created. Here are the three types of cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula: cave, semi-open, and open cenotes.

1. Cave Cenotes

Cave Cenote Yucatan Peninsula

Cave cenotes are exactly what the name suggests, cenotes inside a cave. These cenotes are usually entered through a man-made passage that connects the surface with the underground cavern. These cenotes usually boast incredible geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites.

Because cave cenotes are completely indoor, no natural light can enter and getting a good photograph is a little bit more difficult. The water in cave cenotes is also some of the coolest you will encounter, as the sunlight from the surface can’t warm it up. Though the difference is not that dramatic because the water you see is part of a bigger underground water system!

Examples of cave cenotes near Tulum are Cenote Samula and Cenote Xkeken (both near Valladolid).

2. Semi-Open Cenotes

Semi Open Cenote Yucatan Mexico

Semi-open cenotes are typically the next stage of a collapsing cave cenote. A cave cenote becomes a semi-open cenote when the top of the cavern has fully collapsed, creating an open-air “lake” underground.

These cenotes are usually the most picturesque, as the sunlight allows just enough vegetation to grow. Visitors might find vines dangling above the water surface and plenty of greenery around. The water temperature is refreshingly cold, but visitors can easily warm up from the therapeutic Mexican sun after exiting the water.

Examples of semi-open cenotes in Tulum include Cenote Calavera and Cenote Zaci.

2. Open Cenotes

Open Cenote Mexico

Open cenotes are the easiest forms of cenotes to understand. That is because they are pretty much lakes.

When the bedrock layer is very thin and the underground water is directly underneath the bedrock, open cenotes are created when the bedrock layer collapses. That is why on the surface, they look like lakes, though their formations are much different.

Open cenotes are the best cenotes in Tulum to swim in. The space is usually much bigger than other forms of cenotes and the water temperature is much warmer. However, they usually aren’t the most picturesque locations because of the abundance of vegetation around them.

Examples of open cenotes in Tulum include Cenote Crystal and Casa Cenote.

Best Tulum Cenotes Map

Above is the best Tulum cenotes map that includes all the cenotes we will be talking about.

We have separated the cenotes by how far they are away from Tulum. The ones in orange are cenotes that are within an hour (driving) from Tulum, with the majority of them being a short bike ride away.

The cenotes in purple are ones that are further away, some as far as Vallodolid, a city 1.5 hours away. These cenotes make for an excellent day trip from Tulum and you can also explore the charming city of Valladolid!

Best Cenotes In Tulum, Mexico (< 1 Hour of Travel)

1. Gran Cenote

Gran Cenote in Tulum Yucatan

By: Jessica of UnearthTheVoyage

Type of Cenote: Semi-Open/Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 10 minutes

Entrance Fee: 180 MXN

One of the most famous cenotes in Tulum is Gran Cenote. Located 3 miles from Tulum en route to Coba Arcehaelogical Ruins, Gran Cenote is a short journey from Tulum.

Even though the name would make you think that it’s just one big cenote, Gran Cenote is actually a couple of different cenotes connected by a cave and wooden walkways. The water in Gran Cenote is so clear that you can see straight to the bottom and you can see all the different cave formations, as well as fish and turtles, swimming around.

If you are interested in snorkeling around to see the interesting cave formations and adventuring through the different passageways then you’ll have a great time exploring the Gran Cenote.

The best way to get to Gran Cenote is to rent a car and drive there on your own as it’s only a few minutes’ drive away from Tulum. If you don’t want to rent a car you can hire a taxi to take you to the cenote or you can join a group tour from one of the tour agencies in Tulum. For the adventurous, renting a bicycle and cycling there is also an option.

Once you get there you will be required to rinse off before entering the cenote to protect the delicate ecosystem of the cenote. After you’ve thoroughly explored the cenote there is a big grassy open area where you can dry off in the sun.

When visiting Gran Cenote, it is recommended to bring a long-sleeve swim shirt and your own snorkeling gear. You can rent snorkeling gear there but the face masks are not that great (and used by many people). The water is also extremely cold (it is cave water!) so a swim shirt will help you stay warm while you’re swimming around.

2. Cenote Car Wash

Cenote Car Wash

Type of Cenote: Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 10 minutes

Entrance Fee: 50 MXN for swimming, 200 MXN for diving

Anyone looking for an excellent cenote near Tulum to go swimming must not miss the open-air Cenote Car Wash. Contrary to popular belief, Cenote Car Wash did not earn its name from people washing their cars here. It earned its name from a car wash that used to operate near the road next to the cenote.

The crystal clear water and wide-open space are ideal for swimming, but the main attraction to this beautiful cenote is actually underneath the water. Plenty of marine life, an underwater garden, and a mysterious cavern area lie beneath the transparent water.

Anyone with a cave diving certification can see the incredible cave formations that are deep inside the cavern passageways. Cenote Car Wash is 50 meters in depth!

If you are not diving or snorkeling here, don’t worry. The cenote’s wide-open space is perfect for sun tanning and just relaxing under the glorious Mexican Sun. Adventurous travelers can jump off the wooden platform or go on the rope swing.

If you are lucky, you might even see the baby crocodiles that live here. They are pretty small and fairly harmless. But obviously, don’t approach them!

3. Cenote Calavera

Cenote Calavera semi open cenote Tulum

By: Bailey of DestinationlessTravel

Type of Cenote: Semi-Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 5 minutes

Entrance Fee: 100 MXN

One of the most spectacular cenotes near Tulum is Cenote Calavera. Now, if you speak Spanish you might think this cenote sounds particularly daunting since “Calavera” means “skull.”

The truth is the name comes from the fact that from above, the Cenote is shaped like a skull with one large opening as the mouth, and two smaller openings that look like the eyes. It is often called the Temple of Doom Cenote by tourists.

Located only a short 3 kilometers from downtown Tulum, Cenote Calavera is super easy to get to. Grab a taxi, ride a bike, or even rent a car to get there in only a matter of minutes. Even though it is very close to Tulum, Cenote Calavera is never very busy. In fact, it is possible to get the entire cenote to yourself!

You can jump into the cenote from the top, or enter more carefully on the ladder. It is also popular to go scuba diving at Cenote Calavera. In fact, scuba diving here is easily one of the best things to do in all of Mexico! It is unique, a little, eerie, and a lot of fun!

Cenote Calavera is open every day from 9 AM to 4 PM. It costs 100 MXN to visit Cenote Calavera.

4. Cenote Zacil-Ha

Cenote Zacil-Ha Tulum For Swimming

Type of Cenote: Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 10 minutes

Entrance Fee: 100 MXN (foreigners), 50 MXN (locals)

One of the most family-friendly cenotes of Tulum is Cenote Zacil-Ha. Located 10 minutes away from Tulum Downtown, visitors can either rent a car or a bicycle, take a colectivo (public transportation) towards Coba, or even walk there.

Cenote Zacil-Ha features two small pristine pools, perfect for kids to swim in. Life jackets are available for rent for anyone that doesn’t feel confident swimming in the cenote.

While the kids are enjoying a refreshing swim in cenote Zacil-Ha, adults that prefer not to get wet can relax in the sun or the shaded gazebos. When you feel peckish, head over to the restaurant & bar and get yourself a nice cocktail and some food.

For those looking for an adrenaline-pumping activity, consider zip-lining over the cenote. It is a feature where you hang onto the handlebar of the zip line and let go when you are over the center of the cenote. The zip line is not too high above the cenote so everyone in the family can enjoy this activity.

Zacil-Ha is home to one of the clearest waters in not just Tulum, but all the cenotes in the Riviera Maya!

5. Casa Cenote Tulum

Casa Cenote Tulum

By: Claire of This Travel Lover

Type of Cenote: Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 20 minutes

Entrance Fee: 150 MXN Pesos

One of the top cenotes in Tulum has to be Casa Cenote.  The cenote is part of the largest system of underwater caves in the world which stretches through Quintana Roo, and at Casa Cenote, the cavern system leads right out into the sea.

The meeting of the fresh and salt waters creates a phenomenon in the cenote known as halocline, as the waters don’t mix properly due to the different salt content.  This makes the water appear hazy as you look through it, particularly noticeable if you are diving in the cenote.

While this makes the cenote a popular place for divers, you can also paddle board, kayak, snorkel or go for a swim here, as well as spot wildlife living in the mangroves and under the water – including Pancho the “friendly” crocodile who is often seen sunning himself on a rock.

The cenote resembles a lazy river in a way, it curves through the jungle and there is a slight current.  You can hire a snorkel and other equipment there for an extra fee, or just pay the 150 Mexican pesos for entry if you have your own gear.

Casa Cenote is about 30 minutes’ bike ride from the center of Tulum, or about 20 minutes in a taxi or car.  If you are traveling in Tulum alone, you may prefer to join a tour with one of the dive companies in town for diving or snorkeling which includes transport and the entrance fee.

6. Cenote Crystal

Crystal Cenote Near Tulum For Swimming

By: Daniel of LayerCulture

Type of Cenote: Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 10 minutes

Entrance Fee: 120 MXN

Cenote Crystal is located around 10 minutes from Tulum and is a great way to have a couple of hours of fun in the most mystical jungles of Tulum.

This is the perfect cenote if you are looking for things to do in Riviera Maya and want to get off the beaten track and visit a cenote with fewer tourists.

Cenote Crystal is suitable for swimming and there is a ledge from which you can jump into the water that stands at about 3-4 meters high.

On arrival, you’ll see the open pool surrounded by palm trees and picnic tables which makes an ideal place to sit back and relax if you choose not to jump into the deep crystal waters. However, if you’re not a strong swimmer you can always hold onto the rope in the water provided.

There are plenty of options to get to Cenote Cristal. Visitors can rent a car and park there for free. Otherwise, you can use public transportation and take a cheap colectivo (shared van).  Of course, you can also rent a bicycle to get there.

Cenote Cristal is open from 8 AM to 5 PM daily but keep in mind that you’ll need to arrive before 4 PM to make the last entry. The entrance fee is 120 MXN Pesos but that includes access to the adjacent Cenote Escondido, an excellent cenote in Tulum for snorkeling or diving.

7. Cenote Dos Ojos

Tulum Cave Cenote Dos Ojos For Diving

By: Chris of AquariusTraveller

Type of Cenote: Semi-Open/Cave

Travel Time from Tulum: 30 minutes

Entrance Fee: 350 MXN

If you looking for the best cenote in Tulum for snorkeling and diving, then you cannot miss Cenote Dos Ojos, translating to “Two Eyes Cenote” in English. It has one of the largest and most complex underwater cave systems, ideally for divers and snorkelers. Swimmers will also find the crystal-clear water of Cenote Dos Ojos refreshing.

Located about 20 kilometers northeast of Tulum, Cenote Dos Ojos are reachable through public transportation, a daily tour bus, or renting a car and driving yourself.

Its opening hours are 8 AM to 5 PM with an admission cost of 350 MXN Pesos per person.  A life jacket is included with the admission fee but equipment for snorkeling or diving can be rented for an extra charge. Bathrooms, changing rooms, and lockers are available for your convenience.

The name Two Eyes Cenote comes from the two semi-open cenotes connected by a 400-meter long passageway. These two large cenotes appeared like eyes when seen from underwater.

Anyone deciding to visit Cenote Dos OJos should consider diving or snorkeling, both of which can be organized by tour companies or at the entrance of the cenote. The beauty of Dos Ojos can only be appreciated underwater.

Beneath the crystal waters is the spectacular scenery that looks like it’s from National Geographic. As you navigate through the cavern system, you can see impressive cave formations such as stalactites and stalagmites. You are also very likely to encounter bats and plenty of small fishes.

Miraculously, the water temperature is a constant 24 to 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) throughout the year. Therefore, Dos Ojos is extremely refreshing after wandering around in the hot Mexican sun.

Check out this Cenote Dos Ojos tour!

8. Cenotes Casa Tortuga Tulum

Cenotes Casa Tortuga Tulum

Type of Cenotes: Cave, Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 35 minutes

Entrance Fee: 600 MXN Pesos

If you prefer a cenote guided tour in Tulum, then consider checking out the cenotes at Casa Tortuga Tulum. The property features a total of 4 cenotes (2 cave cenotes and 2 open cenotes) and visitors can see all 4 in a guided tour!

The price for the guided tour is a little pricey at 600 MXN per person, but that includes the rental of a life jacket, snorkel, mask, and the guide himself. The guide will provide excellent information on cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula and the different types of geological formations you see inside the cave cenotes.

Because this is a guided tour, everyone in the family can enjoy this unique Mexico experience. We would recommend wearing water shoes for this guided tour as you will need to walk to the cenotes.

Once you have finished your tour, you are more than welcome to enjoy the two open cenotes on the property. This allows you to enjoy them at your own pace and with a smaller crowd. One of the cenotes features a 3-5 meter cliff jump for adventurous travelers.

Because these Tulum cenotes are part of the hotel’s property, guests staying at the Casa Tortuga Tulum could receive a discount for the guided tour!

9. Cenote Azul

By: Victoria of GuideyourTravel

Type of Cenote: Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 30 minutes

Entrance Fee: 120 MXN

The Cenote Azul (Blue Cenote) lies between Playa del Carmen and Tulum and can easily be reached by car or shared colectivo.

If you’re looking for a half-day trip from Tulum or an afternoon activity, this is a great place to go for all types of travelers. Whether you are a backpacker or traveling with your family, you’ll love the Cenote Azul.

There are several cenotes located near Cenote Azul, so it’s worth coming here to see some of the best things to do in Mexico.

As the name suggests the Cenote Azul is known for its crystal-clear blue waters and beautiful scenery. The cenote is shallow at one end which is perfect for those traveling with children and deep enough for cliff jumping at the other. This is the perfect spot for swimming or simply relaxing.

The cenote can become quite crowded during mid-day so coming early is highly recommended. It is an open-air cenote so it’s very popular among tourists looking for a refreshing swim after a long hot day.

The entrance fee for this cenote is 120 MXN Pesos and there are bathrooms, changing rooms as well as a small shop available. Cenote Azul is open daily from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Best Cenotes Near Tulum (>= 1 Hour of Travel)

1. Cenote Suytun, The “Instagram-Famous” Tulum Cenote

Cenote Suytun Tulum Cenotes

By: Shelley of Travel Mexico Solo

Type of Cenote: Semi-Open/Cave

Travel Time from Tulum: 1.5 hours (Keep in mind the time zone difference)

Entrance Fee: 120 MXN Pesos

There’s no shortage of amazing cenotes to see in Tulum. At only a few dollars to visit, cenotes are the perfect thing to do when traveling to Tulum on a budget.

With so many options, you’re probably wondering how to choose the best one(s). As many of the cenotes are incredibly beautiful and worth checking out, Cenote Suytun is unique in that it’s an underground cenote.

Located not far from Tulum, and close to the pueblo magico (magic town) of Valladolid, Cenote Suytun is inside a cave. There is a hole above the cenote so a little light gets in, and a circular platform in the center, which makes Cenote Suytun perfect for photos. It is known as one of the most “Instagrammable” cenotes near Tulum.

As with most Tulum cenotes, if you want those Instagram-worthy photos without people in them, you’ll want to arrive by about 10 AM, and preferably on a weekday rather than a weekend. This cenote isn’t very big, and quite popular, so it does fill up quickly.

Cenote Suytun is located just over one hour by car from Tulum. It is about 45-minutes from Chichen Itza Mayan ruins, and many combine these two popular places for a Tulum day trip. There are also other beautiful cenotes nearby, like Cenote Zaci and Cenote Oxman.

Cenote Suytun is located on Highway Carretera 180, just east of Valladolid, Mexico. It is open daily, from 9 AM- 5 PM, and costs $120 MXN pesos to enter.

2. Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman

Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman Valladolid Yucatan

Type of Cenote: Semi-Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 1 hour 45 minutes

Entrance Fee: 80 MXN

The semi-open cenote of San Lorenzo Oxman is one of the most scenic cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula. The underground cenote is the site of a collapsed cave. Cascading roots and vines along with the glorious sun rays enter from the surface, creating an exotic landscape that belongs on the cover of a travel magazine.

Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman is located in the Hacienda San Lorenzo,  a beautiful large property that was once an agave plantation.  Not only will you find Cenote Oxman here, but also a relaxing swimming pool, a restaurant & bar, and a lounging area for you to soak in the sun.

The beautiful garden of Hacienda San Lorenzo will lead you to the staircase passageway that takes you down to the cenote. Most visitors come to this quiet cenote for a nice swim, but adrenaline-junkie can have a go at the swing. The swing is completely free to use so make as many splashes as you want!

Though not popular, snorkeling is also an activity you can enjoy at Cenote Oxman. There is no snorkeling rental at the hacienda so you must bring your own equipment. Cenote diving is not possible at Cenote Oxman.

80 MXN pesos is the cost to enter the cenote and the pool area. However, if you plan on eating or drinking at their restaurant, you can select a ticket combo that includes a meal voucher to save money.

3. Cenote Xkeken (Cenote Dzitnup)

Cave Cenote Xkeken Tulum

Type of Cenote: Cave/Semi-Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 1.5 hours

Entrance Fee: 80 MXN (125 if including entrance to nearby Cenote Samula)

Cenote Xkeken (also called Cenote Dzitnup) is not only one of the best cave cenotes near Tulum, but of the entire Yucatan Peninsula. Though the cavern is quite small at around 30 meters by 20 meters (98 feet by 66 feet), incredible cave formations such as stalactites and stalagmites surround this cenote.

Because the light sources inside the cave come from dimly-lit lights and a small opening at the top of the cave, Cenote Xkeken is fairly dark. The water in the cenote is cooler than most because of the lack of sunlight. At least you don’t have to worry about getting sunburn!

Don’t let that deter you from swimming in this cave cenote, seeing the intricate cave formations up close is an eye-opening experience. Just be careful when you enter the water because the surfaces are really slippery.

Snorkeling and diving in Cenote Xkeken are generally not recommended. Due to the low-lighting situation, visibility underwater is very low. The cenote only goes up to a depth of 20 meters.

4. Cenote Samula

Cave Tulum Cenote Samula

Type of Cenote: Cave/Semi-Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 1.5 hours

Entrance Fee: 80 MXN (125 if including entrance to nearby Cenote Xkeken)

Located next to Cenote Xkeken is another one of Mexico’s best cave cenotes – Cenote Samula. Known for its wide-open cavern and turquoise pool waters, it is an excellent place to experience the incredible formations of a cenote.

By definition, Cenote Samula is a semi-open cenote because of the small opening at the top of the cavern. However, the opening so tiny it provides a slither of light (and waterfall if you are lucky). Though it doesn’t do much in providing warmth, it does make it a much more photogenic location. Visitors might find dramatic roots stretching from the opening of the roof to the water surface!

Cenote Samula is a popular location for swimming due to its wide spaces and smaller crowds. Like Cenote Xkeken, be careful of the slippery surfaces when entering the water.

Life vests are available for rent on-site for unconfident swimmers.

5. Cenote Zaci

Cenote Zaci Tulum Valladolid Yucatan Mexico

Credit: Daloetz via C.C. 4.0 (Edited)

Type of Cenote: Semi-Open

Travel Time from Tulum: 1.5 hours

Entrance Fee: 30 MXN Pesos

Located in the center of Valladolid, Cenote Zaci is one of the best cenotes in Valladolid. Though if you aren’t staying in Valladolid (which you totally should), the journey from Tulum takes about 1.5 hours.

Cenote Zaci is a popular cenote with the locals of Valladolid, as it offers an easy escape from the scorching Mexican heat. The cenote is partially covered by a cavern, with stairs and stone walkways on the perimeter leading to a platform on the water’s edge.

Because of the sunlight that enters the cave, beautiful greenery dots the semi-open cenote and offers a superb photo opportunity. Besides the excellent swimming opportunity, Cenote Zaci offers multiple platforms ranging from 1 meter to ~8 meters for adrenaline-junkies to jump off from.

Small fishes live inside this freshwater cenote, so you might get a free “pedicure” when swimming at Cenote Zaci. Just remember to not put on any sunscreen when visiting Cenote Zaci. Unlike other cenotes in Mexico, no shower is required before entering. Sunscreen is detrimental to the delicate cenote environment.

The Coba Cenotes

The Coba Cenotes are three cenotes located in close vicinity of the Coba Archaeological Mayan Ruins. These three cenotes are usually combined with a visit to the Coba ruins to make the perfect day trip from Tulum.

The three Coba Cenotes are Cenote Choo-Ha, Cenote Tankach-Ha, and Cenote Multum Ha.

6. Cenote Choo-Ha

Cenote Choo-Ha Coba

Credit: Luis Miguel Bugallo Sánchez via C.C 3.0 (Edited)

Type of Cenote: Cave Cenote

Travel Time from Tulum: 1 hour

Entrance Fee: 100 MXN

As we have mentioned, Cenote Choo-Ha is one of three cenotes of Coba. With an abundance of interesting cave formations such as stalagmites and stalactites, Cenote Choo-Ha is worth the short visit.

The entrance of the cave is a small 3 to 4-meter opening that leads underground. In terms of size, Cenote Choo-Ha is unquestionably one of the smaller cenotes by Tulum. Swimming is generally not a very popular activity at Cenote Choo-Ha because the water level is quite shallow.

However, the shallow water allows visitors to see the bottom of the cenote. There is a small part of the cenote where the water is deeper, so visitors could swim if they decide to.

Because of this, Cenote Choo-Ha is frequently empty, making the visit much more divine.

7. Cenote Tankach-Ha

Tankach-Ha Cenote By Tulum

Credit: Instagram

Type of Cenote: Cave Cenote

Travel Time from Tulum: 1 hour

Entrance Fee: 100 MXN

Locateda short walk away from Cenote Choo-Ha is Cenote Tankach-Ha (sometimes called Cenote Tamcach-Ha), another one of Coba’s cenotes. Translating to “deep water” in English, Cenote Tankach-Ha is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and jumping off the platforms into the deep water!

To arrive at Cenote Tankach-Ha, visitors must descend two flights of stairs into a cave. Once you have entered the cavern, you are rewarded with cool cave formations and pristine freshwater for swimming. Because the cenote is located deep underneath the ground, the water is a little cooler than usual.

If you have to visit one of the Coba cenotes, we recommend this one because you can get a good swim inside!

8. Cenote Multum Ha

Yucatan Cenote Multum Ha
Credit: Instagram

Type of Cenote: Cave

Travel Time from Tulum: 1 hour

Entrance Fee: 100 MXN

Cenote Multum Ha is the last of the cave cenotes in Coba. While the other two cenotes (Choo-Ha and Tankach-Ha) are located adjacent to each other, Cenote Multum Ha is located an 8-minute drive from the other two cenotes.

But don’t cross this cenote off your list yet!

Because of its inaccessibility, Cenote Multum Ha is often empty, allowing visitors to swim in its pristine water in peace. The interior illumination allows you to see through the water, so it might not be a bad idea to bring snorkeling gear.

Beware of the tours that come around 3 PM though, that could easily crowd the small space inside this cavern cenote.

Visitors with mobility problems should reconsider visiting this cenote because of the 18-meter high spiral staircase from the surface to the cenote.

If your goal is to go swimming in Coba, we still recommend going to Cenote Tankach-Ha, but Cenote Multum Ha will certainly not disappoint!

Best Airbnbs In Playa De Carmen, Mexico

Playa Del Carmen is a small resort town located on the eastern edge of the Yucatan Peninsula. Similar to Cancun (which is only an hour away), Playa Del Carmen features, world-class beaches, incredible resorts, and amazing nightlife.

In our opinion, Playa Del Carmen is a little more laid-back than Cancun. It boasts more of an expat scene, adventurous travelers, and backpackers. Kids-friendly all-inclusive resorts are more difficult to find in Playa Del Carmen.

Typically, when you staying in Cancun, you don’t really leave the Hotel Zone. However, visitors can take many day excursions to nearby attractions in the Yucatan Peninsula when staying in Playa Del Carmen.

Guest Review: Such a wonderful property! I traveled with my husband and two kids and father in law and we all had a great stay. The casita was nice for my father in law to have his own private space. The main house had very nice and thoughtful details. The pool and jacuzzi were fantastic after a long day at the beach, to come back and relax. The location for us was great. We enjoy being away from a lot of people so it was nice to have the quiet away from the hustle. We also had several sunsets and sunrises and Punta Sur. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks for a great visit! – Alexis, March 2020

Where To Stay In Tulum, Mexico: Best Hotels, Airbnbs & Hostels

Where To Stay In Tulum, Mexico: Best Hotels, Airbnbs & Hostels

Not sure where to stay in Tulum, Mexico? Worry not.

Located in the Mexico state of Quintana Roo, Tulum is surrounded by thriving jungles, glistening waters of the Caribbean sea, authentic Mayan culture, magnificent cenote (sinkholes) and mysterious archaeological ruins.

It is no surprise that Tulum won the Mexico & Central America’s Leading Beach Destination Award for 2020.

This diversity of things to do in Tulum allows every traveler to enjoy this small beach town in the Yucatan Peninsula. Consequently, the popularity of Tulum is on the rise… exponentially.

What was once a sleepy town in the Riveria Maya is now booming with tourism, and with that came a lot of beautiful hotels and places to stay in Tulum.

That is why we have written this guide to help you pick the perfect place to stay in Tulum. In our guide below, you will find treehouses, cabanas, Airbnbs, private pool villas, hotels, hostels, and resorts in Tulum!

Enjoy!

Best Areas To Stay In Tulum, Mexico

When you are picking a place to stay in Tulum, the most important choice is deciding whether you want to stay in Tulum Downtown or Tulum Beach, the two best areas to stay in Tulum.

While that doesn’t seem like a big difference, visitors will have a completely different experience of Tulum depending on which area they decide to stay.

The distance from Tulum Beach to Tulum Town is about 7 kilometers. If you are renting a car in Tulum, then moving from one area to the other is no problem. However, if you don’t have a car, the only options are getting a taxi, renting a bicycle (30 minutes), or walking (1.5 hours).

Given the hot and humid weather in Tulum, it makes it a little inconvenient to go to the beach all the time if you are staying in the center of Tulum.

Staying In Center of Tulum (Tulum Downtown)

Best Areas To Stay In Tulum Downtown

Pros of Staying in Tulum Town: Everything from food to accommodation is cheaper, more authentic vibes, easier to get around, awesome backpacker scene!

Tulum Town, sometimes referred to as Tulum Downtown or Center of Tulum, is the best area to stay in Tulum for backpackers or budget travelers. Though containing many cheap backpacker hostels, visitors will also find an array of beautiful places to stay in Tulum Center.

Besides more affordable accommodations in Tulum Center, food tends to be cheaper and more authentic. If you would like the experience of eating a taco from a street vendor, you can only have that in Tulum town. After all, many locals live in this area and they can’t afford tourist prices!

Tulum Center is also much more well-connected than Tulum Beach. The 307 highway that connects Cancun and Playa Del Carmen passes through Tulum, making it easy for anyone coming into Mexico through the Cancun Airport (which is a majority of you).

This makes it easier to visit various places like the cenotes near Tulum, Tulum Ruins, or even taking a day trip from Tulum.

If you are backpacking Mexico, then staying in Tulum center will guarantee that you meet other like-minded travelers. The backpacker’s scene in Tulum is thriving!

Staying In Tulum Beach Area

Tulum Town Resorts

Pros of Staying In Tulum Beach Area: World-class dining options, extravagant accommodations, easy access to beautiful beaches, many “Instagram-worthy” locations

If your visit to Tulum is about enjoying the finer things in life (or if you are in Tulum for your honeymoon), then don’t hesitate to stay in Tulum Beach.

The Tulum Beach area is where most of the fancy resorts and hotels in Tulum are located. Here visitors will find some of the finest dining options (though in our opinion, lack the authentic flavors of Mexico), upscale bars and nightclubs, spa retreats and the likes.

In a way, the Tulum Beach area is similar to Cancun’s Hotel Zone, where most of the luxurious accommodations are located. However, compared to the places to stay in Cancun, the accommodations in Tulum are more gorgeous and uniquely-designed.

With the way the Tulum Beach zone is set up, there is only one narrow road that runs north to south or vice versa. The nice resorts in Tulum Beach area are all located on the eastern part of the road, so that they all face the beautiful Caribbean Sea and have a plot of the beach as private property.

Because of the single narrow road, getting around the Tulum Beach area is a pain in the you know where. Public transportation doesn’t run in this area (as of now) and visitors have to rely on taxis to get around. Though if you are staying in a luxurious hotel, they might sort that out for you!

Unlike the accommodations in Cancun, all-inclusive resorts in Tulum are incredibly rare. But thanks to Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa, now you have nothing to worry about.

Surrounded by the lush Mayan jungles on three sides and the gorgeous beach on the last, Dreams Tulum’s location is purely magical. When you are tired of the never-ending stretches of greenery on one side, just look to the other side and you will see the glistening sea.

Charming Mexican colonial architecture elements are carefully blended with upscale contemporary design, giving guests a unique decor that will never cease to impress. Each room is equipped with all the necessities to provide guests with a peaceful and comfortable stay.

Though the rooms are impressive, they are far from being the gem of this Tulum resort. There are enough amenities in this Tulum accommodation to keep the entire family entertained! Adults can enjoy the secluded adult-only section while kids can enjoy the splash park near the Explorer’s Club.

Dreams Tulum also offers various water sports, allowing guests to further explore the beautiful waters of Tulum Beach. IT is undeniably one of the best hotels in Tulum for families!

Though Dreams Tulum is located on a beautiful part of Tulum Beach, it is far from the most popular part of the beach zone. Guests that would like to visit the trendy Tulum Beach area or Downtown Tulum would need to get a taxi from the hotel. That is, if you decide to leave this exciting all-inclusive resort in Tulum!

Best Hostels in Tulum Beach

Best Hostels In Tulum Mexico

Credit: Bambu Gran Palas & Cenote

Though the Tulum beachfront area is filled with luxury accommodations, visitors will find a handful of hostels there as well. Bambu Gran Palas & Cenote is one of the few hostels in Tulum Beach area.

This beautiful hostel is known for its sustainable practices. In fact, the hostel is completely built using bamboo and coconut and runs on solar power!

This Tulum hostel’s most iconic feature is the gorgeous cenote in the rear of the hostel. As nature’s swimming pool, a cenote is the best place to relax after a long day in Tulum. There is also a small bar for guests to sip on a mojito as they dip their feet into the cenote’s beautiful waters.

This hostel is nestled into the jungle of Tulum, but Tulum beach is directly across the road from this hostel. It is still a 10-minute walk or so but that is nothing compared to staying in the center of Tulum.

With nature’s paradise also comes a few cons to staying at Bambu Gran Palas & Cenote. Because you are in the jungle, there are quite a few insects here. Mosquitoes are abundant, especially with the cenote being so close.

Selina Best Family Hotels In Tulum

Credit: Selina Tulum

Selina Tulum is one of the newest hostels from the chain of hostels called Selina. They have hostels all over Latin America and probably more. We had the pleasure to stay at a few of them, namely the one in Cuenca Ecuador, Lake Atitlan Guatemala, and Mexico City.

The one thing about Selina hostels is that they never disappoint. Each hostel meets a high standard and Selina Tulum is no exception.

The new Selina Tulum is a gorgeous beachfront property that not only offers the easiest access to one of the best beaches in Tulum, but many trendy locations in the Tulum Beach area such as Hardwood, Gitano, Rosa Negra, Jungle Gym and more!

The price for a dormitory bed in Selina is a little higher than typical, but each bed features the necessary amenities (and more) for a comfortable stay. Guests can also enjoy the beautiful pool, cozy bar and restaurant, or the beach! For yoga-lovers, there is a yoga hut for you to practice your craft.

Selina Tulum also boasts an excellent co-working environment. Digital nomads will find no headaches when using their high-speed and reliable WiFi (unlike the majority of the Tulum Beach area).

When you are not working, there are plenty of common areas and events to meet other like-minded travelers. If you are backpacking Tulum and want a comfortable and friendly stay, then Selina Tulum is a no-brainer!

5 Days In Mexico City Itinerary: Best Of CDMX

5 Days In Mexico City Itinerary: Best Of CDMX

Not sure what to do in Mexico City in 5 days?

As North America’s largest city, planning a trip to Mexico City, or CDMX, as it’s often referred to, can be overwhelming. However, it doesn’t have to be! If you do some research, plan ahead, and plan strategically, five days in Mexico City can be the perfect amount of time.

Now, the one trick to navigating Mexico City’s seemingly unlimited number of things to do, see and eat, as well as its massive size, is to plan your trip neighborhood by neighborhood.

With a population of about 8.5 million people, Mexico City’s traffic is legendary… and not in a good way! Planning your trip by spending one day in each CDMX neighborhood will eliminate the amount of time you’re sitting in traffic, and maximize the amount of time you’re enjoying this amazing city.

With that said, let’s dive into our epic 5 days in Mexico City itinerary!

How Many Days Should You Spend In Mexico City

Things To Do In Mexico City In 5 Days

To be honest, CDMX is one of those places where you’d never run out of things to do. It’s such a dynamic city, always changing and evolving, as big cities tend to do. For this reason, how many days should you spend in Mexico City depends on what you wish to accomplish. You could spend months there and not see everything you’d like to.

With that said, 5 days in Mexico City is a good amount of time to see a lot of the most famous sites and historically important places — and of course, eat a lot of tacos.

Now, does this sound familiar? I need a vacation from my vacation? Of course it does… because, sadly, so many people say those dreaded post-vacation words.

That is the kind of statement people make after trying to cram too much in during their vacation. We won’t do that here. In fact, the last day of the trip is all about relaxation, and just strolling through two of the most peaceful areas of the city.

However, before getting to this very relaxing Day 5, there’s a lot of ground to cover as you discover the best things to do in Mexico City.

5 Days In Mexico City Itinerary Map

As we have mentioned, we will tackle this mega-metropolitan city neighborhood by neighborhood. Above is an interactive map with each neighborhood is color-coded. If two of the same dots are the same colors, that means you visit them on the same day.

Using this Mexico City map, it is much easier to visualize how much time you will be commuting and plan your trip effectively.

On the map, there is a small toggle at the upper-left corner that will give you an overall guide of all the dots on the map. That way, you can have quick access to a list of the best places to visit in Mexico City.

What To Do In Mexico City In 5 Days

Day 1: Day Trip To Teotihuacan & Lucha Libre At Night

Teotihuacan Mexico City Trip

Teotihuacan is a great many things; UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of Mexico’s oldest, most important archeological wonders, and well — magical! The Teotihuacan site is located in San Juan Teotihuacan, one of Mexico’s 130 or so pueblos mágicos (magic towns)!

Just what is a pueblo mágico? This prestigious designation is awarded by the Secretary of Tourism in Mexico to certain special pueblos (small towns) that have noteworthy qualities including exceptional natural beauty, unique folkloric traditions and important historical value.

In the case of Teotihuacan, it’s all about the history. This ancient site is about 2,000-years-old and also quite large. It is unknown who actually built Teotihuacan, but one thing for sure is that it is much older than Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World in Yucatan, Mexico.

Because dynamite was used for the excavation of the site, many of the structures you see today are rebuilt. It is due to this fact that Teotihuacan is not a present-day Seven Wonders of the World.

Teotihuacan Day Trip From Mexico City

You may have noticed this Mexico City itinerary calls for spending one entire day at Teotihuacan. While this does mean you use up quite a big chunk of your 5 days in Mexico City, Teotihuacan should be a day-long affair.

Though only located about 32 miles (50km) northeast of Mexico City, it can take from 1-2 hours to get there thanks to Mexico City’s aforementioned traffic. The best course of action is to arrive at Teotihuacan right when it opens at 9 AM, which will actually serve two functions.

In addition to beating the traffic and crowds, you’ll also maximize your time in the shade!

Though a tour guide is not necessary, it is highly recommended to assist you in learning the rich history of Teotihuacan. Visitors can easily find qualified tour guides at the entrance of Teotihuacan, but don’t forget to negotiate the price.

Teotihuacan Avenue Of The Dead DF Mexico

Teotihuacan, and many Mexican archeological sites, all tend to lack one common element — shade. Since these sites are so frequently studied by historians and archeologists, most trees at the sites have been cleared for their ease of study; meaning shade is at a premium for visitors.

Arriving as soon as the site opens means you can explore all the outdoor spaces, including climbing all three pyramids, Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon and Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl, before the midday sun arrives.

As soon as it starts getting hot, head indoors to the Teotihuacan Museum (Museo de Sitio Teotihuacán) and the semi-shaded Sculpture Garden (Jardín Escultórico).

After spending 4-5 hours at Teotihuacan, reserve some time to explore the pueblo mágico of San Juan Teotihuacán. Many also head to the nearby La Gruta (the cave/grotto) restaurant. As the name states, this traditional Mexican restaurant is located inside a cave.

Finish your first night in Mexico City by watching some live lucha libre, or Mexican Wrestling. Lucha libre is one of the most high-energy sporting events in Mexico City. It is a great way to end the night with some fun and uncontrollable laughter!

Lucha Libre Mexico City

Credit: Miguel Discart via C.C 2.0

Because lucha libre doesn’t happen every night of the week, you might not be able to see it on your first night in Mexico City. Worry not, there will be at least a few showings in your 5 nights in Mexico City.

There are two stadiums where you should go watch lucha libre: Arena Mexico and Arena Coliseo. Both of those are great stadiums to experience lucha but remember to check their showtimes before purchasing your ticket.

Want to save the hassle of planning your own trip to lucha libre? Check out our recommended tour here!

Day 2: Coyoacan & Xochimilco

Frida Kahlo Museum Mexico City

By: Rod Waddington via C.C. 2.0

On Day 2, you’ll head to the southern part of the city to explore Coyoacan, home to the famed Frida Kahlo Museum, and Xochimilco (pronounced so-chee-mil-co).

The ancient Aztec canals of Xochimilco are another one of Mexico City’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and home to the brightly colored trajineras, or gondola-style boats.

Some visitors prefer to head to Xochilimco during the day, while others enjoy the more festive, party-type atmosphere at night. The choice is yours, though do plan to enjoy Xochilimco and Coyoacan on the same day, as their proximity to one another makes for a great one-day combo.

Mexico City Xochimilco Trajineras Boats

Located in southern Mexico City, Coyoacan is a colorful and beautiful neighborhood. It is home to one of Mexico City’s most famous museums — the Blue House (Casa Azul) AKA Frida Kahlo Museum.

There are also other amazing, lesser-known museums like the Diego Rivera-Anahuacalli Museum and the National Museum of Popular Cultures.

As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Mexico City, Coyoacan gives visitors a chance to see what old-school CDMX looked like.

Head to the massive 16th Century Spanish cathedral, Iglesia de San Juan Bautista and historic buildings around Centennial Garden (Jardin Centenario), for what feels like a journey back in time.

Coyoacan Mexico City Itinerary 5 days

Besides its colorful streets, museums, and history, the Coyoacan neighborhood is known for three foods — tepoznieves (ice cream/shaved ice), churros and tostadas.

You’ll see several tepoznieves and churros shops located around Centennial Park (Parque Centenario), the large park in the center of Coyoacan. However, for tostadas, you’ll want to make your way to the lively Coyoacan Market (Mercado de Coyoacán).

Head to the center of this traditional Mexican mercado and look for the colorful tostada stalls. Take a seat and sample a few different types, like tinga de pollo (BBQ shredded chicken) and coctel de camaron (shrimp cocktail), or whatever else catches your eye.

Tired of doing it all by yourself? Check out this full day Coyoacan and Xochimilco tour!

Day 3: Centro Historico & Zocalo

Zocalo Mexico City

You could realistically spend weeks wandering around Centro Historico (Historic Downtown) and the Zocalo (Main Square).

For all James Bond fans out there, the famous opening sequence of the movie “Spectre” was filmed in the Zocalo of Mexico City!

With only one day though, here are five of the more well-known sites and things to do in this Mexico City’s Centro Historico.

1. Templo Mayor (Main Temple)

Templo Mayor Mexico City Aztecs

This UNESCO World Heritage site was once the location of the central temple of the Aztec empire. You can stroll the remnants of the temple and see some of its most historic archeological treasure in the onsite museum.

The Templo Mayor is located in the Zocalo, where you’ll also find the Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana de México) and National Palace (Palacio Nacional). Depending on how you want to divide your time, those are two other great things to do in Zocalo.

2. Palacio Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts)

Palacio Bellas Artes Centro Historico

Nowadays, Palacio Bellas Artes is one of the most iconic landmarks of Mexico City. The exterior of this golden-domed, European-style building is a work of art itself; though do head inside to see the gorgeous art deco interior.

Located right next to Bellas Artes, the Alameda Central Park (Parque Alameda Central) is a well-maintained urban park with several beautiful sculptures and fountains. As Centro Historico can often be overwhelming, head to the Alameda and take a break from the CDMX hustle and bustle.

3. Barrio Chino (Chinatown)

Ask yourself this… Are you even in a proper big city if there’s not a Chinatown!? One little known fact about CDMX is that there is, in fact, a Mexico City Chinatown. Though it’s not very big, do take the time to stroll through and snap some pictures of the iconic red arch entryway and colorful hanging paper lanterns.

4. Torre Latinoamericana (Latin American Tower)

Torre LatinoAmericana Centro Historico DF Mexico City

This is one of the iconic skyscrapers that make up Mexico City’s skyline. On a clear day, head to Mirador Torre Latino (Lookout Platform) at the top of the tower for some amazing city views.

It costs $70 pesos ($4) to access the Mirador, so make sure you’re only paying to go up on a clear day. For those who don’t want to pay, head to the nearby Sears department store building and take the elevator to the cafe on the top floor, which will have a similar view.

5. Eat TACOS!

Mexico City Tacos

There’s no shortage of amazing taquerías (taco shops) and taco restaurants in Centro Historico. Here are just some of the classics…

  • Tacos de Canasta los Especiales serves a unique style of taco called tacos de canasta (basket tacos). They come served from baskets, in varieties including chicharrón (fried pork skin), papas (potato) and frijol (bean). At only about 50 cents per taco, try them all and discover your favorite.
  • El Huequito serves Mexico City’s most famous taco, the taco al pastor. These pork tacos, cooked on a Middle Eastern-style spit, and topped with pineapple, are a must-try on any Mexico City trip.
  • Los Cocuyos is the place if you want to eat like the locals do. This no-frills taquería serves another Mexico City classic taco, tacos suaderos. A sort of flank steak, suadero is a favorite amongst chilangos (Mexico City’s locals).

If you managed to save room for dessert, head to Churrería El Moro for Mexico’s beloved sweet treat, churros.

Day 4: Reforma, Chapultepec Park & Polanco

Angel Of Independence Mexico City Trip

On Day 4, you’ll head to one of the world’s largest urban parks, Chapultepec Park (Bosque de Chapultepec). This 1,700-acre park is massive and spans the entire physical area between Reforma Ave. (Avenida Reforma) and the Polanco neighborhood.

Start the day with a stroll down Reforma Ave., and say “buenos días” (good morning) to the golden Angel of Independence (Angel de la Independencia) statue located in the center of this main Mexico City street. Keep walking, and you’ll eventually wind up in Chapultepec Park.

Now, you could realistically spend an entire week in the park and not see everything! From the iconic Chapultepec Castle (Castillo de Chapultepec), nine museums, two lakes, Chapultepec Zoo, and even more, you’ll have to be selective with your time.

Chapultepec Castle Park Mexico City Guide

For most, Chapultepec Castle is a must-see on any Mexico City itinerary.

It is special because it’s the only true castle on the North American continent, as royals did once live there. The former home of the Austrian archduke, Emperor Maximilian I, and his wife, Empress Carlota, is now one of the top sightseeing locations in Mexico City.

Mexico City is home to about 150 museums.

Its most visited, the National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología), is located in Chapultepec Park. This world-class museum chronicles thousands of years of Mexican archeological history, going all the way back to the mysterious Olmec civilization.

National Museum of Anthropology Mexico City

When it’s time to leave the park, head to Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood — one of the poshest neighborhoods in town! The tree-lined President Masaryk Ave. (Avenida Presidente Masaryk), known as the “Rodeo Drive of Mexico,” is the place to shop.

The gorgeous Soumaya Museum (Museo Soumaya), one of the nicest buildings in CDMX, and Jumex Museum (Museo Jumex) contemporary art museum, round out the best things to do in Polanco. However, do stick around this area if you want to splurge on some fine dining in Mexico City.

Polanco Museums In Mexico City

In Polanco, you’ll find Enrique Olvera’s famed Pujol, considered one of the best restaurants in the world by the prestigious 50 Best list. The Quintonil and La Docena restaurants also made that short list, so if you can’t get a reservation at Pujol, these two make nice alternatives.

Day 5: Roma Norte & La Condesa

La Condesa Mexico City
Roma Mexico City

Remember at the beginning of the article… when you were told you’d have a day of rest!? Day 5 is that day. As you probably gathered, you’ll be covering a lot of ground on your 5 days in Mexico City, but you’ll also want to schedule in a day with, basically, no plans at all.

On Day 5, you’ll spend the day enjoying the two prettiest neighborhoods in Mexico City, Roma Norte and La Condesa. These calm, urban oases make for perfect places to end an action-packed 5-day Mexico City trip.

Roma Norte (North Rome) and La Condesa (The Countess) are located right next to one other. These sister neighborhoods are quite similar, with beautiful parks, unique architecture and buildings, colorful street art, great cafes, bars and restaurants, and more.

If you’re into architecture and design, head to Alvaro Obregon Ave. (Avenida Álvaro Obregón) in Roma Norte. This main street has some of the neighborhood’s nicest buildings, with design esthetics ranging from colonial to art deco to classical; each one somehow nicer than the last.

Walk across Insurgents Ave. (Avenida Insurgentes), one of Mexico City’s main streets, and you’ll be in La Condesa. Head to the tree-lined street, Hipódromo (racetrack), for a leisurely stroll.

Heading to Oaxaca? Make sure you check out the cool mountainous town of San Jose Del Pacifico!

This pathway circles around beautiful Amsterdam Ave. (Avenida Amsterdam), one of the main streets in Condesa. Once a horse racing track, hence the name and circular shape, it’s now a relaxing way to get to know La Condesa.

La Condesa Park Mexico

In Condesa, you’ll find two of Mexico City’s best parks — Mexico Park (Parque Mexico) and Spain Park (Parque España). Walk through them at your pace, before heading to one of Condesa’s best cafes, taquerías and lunch spots. Some of the most popular places include Maque, El Pescadito and Lardo, respectively.

When it’s dinner time, head back to Roma Norte to enjoy some of the best restaurants in this area including Rosetta and Maximo Bistrot. For after-dinner drinks, check out two of Mexico City’s best speakeasies, Casa Franca and Maison Artemisia… and if you then fancy a late-night taco run, there’s no place better than Taquería Orinoco.

If you are visiting Mexico City, we highly recommend you to stay in one of the following neighborhoods: Centro Historic, Roma, La Condesa, Juarez, or Polanco.

Here are some specific places we recommend you to stay in CDMX:

Tips When Visiting Mexico City

Mexico City 5 Days

1. You might think that everyone would speak English in Mexico City because it is such a big city and close to America. However, that is far from the truth. If you plan on getting any street food, you will need to use your Spanish. Convenience stores? Spanish.

The more touristy the neighborhood is, the more chance that the people there will speak English, but that is not a guarantee. We recommend having a basic level of Spanish or bring a Spanish phrasebook when you visit Mexico City.

2. Get a SIM card as soon as you arrive in Mexico City. They are very affordable and can be easily purchased at convenience stores such as Oxxo’s. Go for companies such as Telcel, Movistar, or AT&T Unidos, they are the most reliable companies in Mexico City.

Activation might require a little bit of Spanish but you can always ask the reception of your accommodation or even the cashier of the convenience store to help you out (if they speak English).

3. Eat as much street food as you can! While there are many nice and high-end restaurants in Mexico, we find that street food is some of our favorite foods. It is an entirely unique experience that cannot be missed!

Is Mexico City Safe?

Is Mexico City Safe

One of the most common questions asked is whether it is safe or not to visit Mexico City. While everyone’s experiences differ, we can give you a bit of our opinion.

Mexico City isn’t the safest city to visit in the world, not even close. Theft and pickpockets are incredibly common, especially against foreigners. However, there are some tips that can make your visit a little safer.

1. The Metro is one of the cheapest and most convenient public transportation in Mexico City. However, pickpockets and theft are extremely common. Keep your belongings close to you and make sure your pockets are protected. Thieves will slice your pockets and take whatever is inside.

Be extra careful if you are taking the Metro during rush hour because you will be so squished you won’t be able to move and protect your belongings.

2. If the Metro has put you off, you might be tempted to take a taxi instead. After all, they aren’t the most expensive mode of transportation. We highly recommend you to not take a taxi ever in Mexico City.

Always take an Uber if you can (that is why the SIM card is so important). Ubers are much safer compared to taxis.

Is your destination only a 15-minute walk away? Make sure you don’t pass a sketchy neighborhood on the way. If you don’t know if the area you are passing through, it is better to just take an Uber.

3. Plan on enjoying Mexico City’s nightlife? You should! Similar to taking the Metro in CDMX, just be extra careful with your belongings and your drinks. Just take what you need to go out in case you do have your things stolen.

We highly recommend you to purchase travel insurance before visiting Mexico City!

Discover San Jose Del Pacifico, Oaxaca: Magic Mushrooms & More!

Discover San Jose Del Pacifico, Oaxaca: Magic Mushrooms & More!

If you are reading this guide, then you have probably heard of a town in the mountains of Oaxaca known as San Jose Del Pacifico. About a year ago, I was also in your shoes, traveling around Mexico from Oaxaca city to Puerto Escondido, when I heard there was a town in between that had magic mushrooms in the wild.

The town is called San Jose Del Pacifico, and it’s a town where magic mushrooms can be consumed legally. There are no police forces in the town of San Jose Del Pacifico, so the locals make the laws and rules.

With the beginning of decriminalization of psychedelic mushrooms and other scientific studies that indicate mental health improvement with micro-dosing, the popularity of psychedelic mushrooms has been skyrocketing.

Many people have even said that psychedelic mushrooms helped them tremendously with their depression, and there are statistics to prove that.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that you are starting to hear about San Jose Del Pacifico more and more; a place in the mountains where you can be with nature and the magic mushrooms. A healing journey that will be nothing but serenity and peace.

If this sounds like something you are interested in, keep reading.

How to Get to San Jose Del Pacifico, Oaxaca

If you are planning on going to San Jose Del Pacifico, then you are either at one of two places, Oaxaca city, or by the coast (Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, or Pochutla). The cost to get to San Jose Del Pacifico should be around 100-120 MXN pesos from Oaxaca city and Pochutla.

Going From Oaxaca City To San Jose Del Pacifico

If you are in Oaxaca city, there are vans that run to Pochutla and stops at San Jose Del Pacifico. The vans are known as “vomit vans” because they go so fast on these windy roads that the majority of foreigners vomit in them.

The ride is only about 3 hours from Oaxaca city to San Jose Del Pacifico (short for bus journeys in Mexico), but don’t underestimate it. Take your motion-sickness prevention pills beforehand. I always travel with my multi-purpose medicine kit

Ask the reception at your accommodation where you can take a bus to San Jose Del Pacifico. If they are not sure where that is, just tell them you want to go to Pochutla.

The reception should be able to point you to the nearest stop. The vans run quite frequently (every 30 minutes or so) but just be aware that they might not be in service at night or late evening.

Going From Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, or Pochutla to San Jose Del Pacifico

If you are coming from the coast, you will have to get to the city of Pochutla to take the “vomit van” to San Jose Del Pacifico. As far as I know, two companies have vans to San Jose del Pacifico, Lineas Unidas and Eclipse 70. You can find their terminals easily on Google Maps.

The vans do run quite frequently so don’t worry about not making the one you want. However, be aware that the vans might not run at night or late evening.

Where to Find Magic Mushrooms in San Jose Del Pacifico,  Oaxaca (And Not Get Scammed)

San Jose Del Pacifico is located in the mountains surrounded by lush scenery. One of the most popular things to do in San Jose Del Pacifico is to take a magic mushroom (or hongos in Spanish) and watch nature unravel around you.

If you do not want to take any magic mushrooms, nature alone will have you astonished.

But where to find these magic mushrooms in San Jose Del Pacifico?

Chances are you will be offered them at the very beginning of your arrival; chances are also are that they will be counterfeits or defectives. Around 75% of the people I met in San Jose Del Pacifico bought fake or expired mushrooms that had no effect on them.

The locals know how much of a big hit these magic mushrooms are and started making fake ones to sell to unaware tourists.

But you won’t be one of them after reading this San Jose Del Pacifico guide!

The best place to find magic mushrooms (or hongos in Spanish) is a place called Cabañas Pacifico. Up until recently, the place was not on Google Maps and finding it was a little bit difficult. Now you can see it in the map below.

Where To Find Magic Mushrooms Hongos In San Jose Del Pacifico

Cabañas Pacifico is not located on the main road in San Jose Del Pacifico, but rather on a small concrete path on the right (if you are going downhill) of the main path. This small road is not on Google Maps, but it is hard to miss with the human eyes.

Proceed to the path on the right and you will run into a sign that looks like the one below. If you don’t, that means you are not on the right path!

San Jose Del Pacifico best place to get magic mushrooms

The sign says that the property is located at the end of the road. Simply head down and you will arrive at the front of the property.

Cabañas Pacifico is not only a place to stay in San Jose del Pacifico, but it also features a restaurant on the second floor. Go up the stairs on the left and you will arrive at an outdoor patio with jaw-dropping views of the nature of San Jose del Pacifico.

Unlike most places that offer whole mushrooms (hongos), this restaurant serves mushroom tea. After totally not having done it ourselves and learning from other traveler’s experiences, it seems that the mushroom tea is the most effective way to ingest these magic mushrooms.

The mushroom tea here is the best in all of San Jose Del Pacifico. The cost was 200 MXN pesos per cup (at the time of writing) and you have to follow the instructions the old grandma will give you, or else you might overdose.

If you cannot locate the place, go to the Italian restaurant in town called La Taberna de Los Duendes. There you will find some amazing food that is well-priced for its portion. After enjoying a meal there, you can ask the waiter where you find some magic mushrooms. (That is how we found this wonderful place!)

Try to avoid Comedor Jasmine! We met several travelers that got whole hongos (mushrooms) from Comedor Jasmine that had absolutely no effect! We were pretty sure they got scammed considering we visited during mushroom season in San Jose del Pacifico, so all the hongos should be fresh!

Other Things To Do In San Jose Del Pacifico, Oaxaca

San Jose Del Pacifico is becoming a very popular backpacking destination in Mexico, especially for those traveling between the quaint city of Oaxaca to the beach town of Puerto Escondido. Up until recently, sampling the local fungi was the only thing you could really do in San Jose Del Pacifico.

Nowadays, you will find a variety of other things to do in San Jose Del Pacifico, such as:

1. Yoga

Word on the street is that San Jose Del Pacifico is becoming a fairly hippie town, with yoga studios and wellness centers spawning. While we haven’t been to a yoga studio in San Jose Del Pacifico (there weren’t any when we visited), we heard that there are a few in town now.

With Google Maps lagging behind, it is best to ask the locals for the location of the yoga studio.

2. Ayahuasca

We were quite surprised to hear that Ayahuasca is becoming popular in San Jose Del Pacifico, Oaxaca.

For those who aren’t familiar with Ayahuasca, it is a hallucinogenic medicinal plant from the Amazon Forest in South America. Its effects are rather unique, with each participant usually experiencing something different.

Most people usually experience something unworldly when trying Ayahuasca, but eventually come out of the ceremony with a better self-understanding, mood, and self-awareness. In a way, it promotes better mental well-being and sometimes helps with issues such as depressions, anxiety, and the likes.

However, there are cases where Ayahuasca did more harm than good.

Because the Ayahuasca ceremony requires shamans that are native to the Amazonian region, it is rather strange to find the ceremony available in San Jose Del Pacifico. If it is something that you really want to try, we highly recommend you to visit countries like Peru, where Ayahuasca is more professional.

However, if you really want to try it (at your own risk) in San Jose del Pacifico, then go ahead!

3. Temazcal

On the other hand, Temazcal is one of the most popular wellness activities in Mexico. Participants enter a small sweat lodge where a shaman will use the sound of chanting and the fragrance of herbs to detoxify you.

It isn’t as simple as it sounds though, because the sweat lodge is very hot and humid, which makes breathing very difficult sometimes. The whole ceremony also lasts 2 hours in total!

If you are going to visit Tulum, Temazcal is also a very popular activity there!

Things to Know Before Visiting San Jose Del Pacifico, Oaxaca

1. San Jose Del Pacifico is about 2500m (8,200 ft) above sea level. The weather can get very cold especially at night. Pack layers and check the weather beforehand. It is going to be strange to pack gloves and a hat for Mexico, but you will thank me later!

2. Mushroom season is from the months of July to October. That is the best time to go and you will have the highest chances of finding good quality mushrooms. In the other months, they sell mushrooms preserved in honey. Some of those will be effective, but some will not.

3. It is “legal” to consume psychedelic mushrooms in San Jose Del Pacifico, Oaxaca. There is no police presence and the locals make their own laws.

4. Take a motion-sickness prevention pill before you get in the van, you will thank me later.

5. There is internet service (via mobile phone) in certain parts of the town. There is also an internet cafe and a restaurant with WiFi. Many accommodations are now starting to have WiFi, albeit it can be unreliable.

6. There is no ATM in town. However, some places accept credit cards, but with an additional charge on it.

Where To Stay In Tulum? Beachfront Or City Center?

Tulum Travel Guide

If you are deciding where to stay in Tulum, you must come across deciding between staying at the Tulum beachfront and the Tulum city center (called Tulum Centro). While each of the two places has its pros and cons, we personally like staying in the city center a lot more.

Staying on the Tulum Beachfront will feel like you are staying in Cancun, with over-the-top prices, luxurious hotels, and lots of tourists.

While that is not always a bad thing, on LivingOutLau, we want to explore more of the culture of these destinations, and it is hard to do that by staying in places where locals won’t visit because the hotels cost a chunk of their salary.

Hence, our Tulum guide will focus on the accommodations in Tulum Centro, where you will find local flavors, deep Mexican heritage, and stunning accommodations for anyone traveling Tulum on a budget!

For anyone interested in accommodations in Tulum Beach, check out on separate guide on the best places to stay in Tulum Beach (and more)!
